Mr. Jun Kin Wong (J. K.) Wong
Lifetime Honorary Chairman
Montreal Chinese Community and Cultural Center
Building the Montreal Chinese Community and Cultural Centre (“Chinese Cultural Centre”) is a dream that all Montreal Chinese have had for over twenty years. Countless challenges have been overcome thanks to the involvement and continued support of the Board of Directors of the Montreal Chinese Community and Cultural Centre, all three levels of Canadian government, the Chinese government, Canadian businesses, the Montreal Chinese community, as well as, others living in Montreal and across Canada.
J. K. Wong was the Co-Founder, Chairman and President of the Montreal Chinese Community and Cultural Centre from January 2003 to May 2007. He provided leadership and strategic direction for the fundraising and construction of the Chinese Cultural Centre, a community-based, non-profit organization established to foster the understanding and appreciation of Chinese history, art, and culture in Canada. He was responsible for raising a total of $8.5 million ($6.3 million in grants from the federal, provincial and municipal governments, $1.5 million from bank financing, and $700,000 from community fundraising efforts).
Since its opening on November 12, 2005, the Chinese Cultural Centre has become a popular landmark in Montreal’s Chinatown for Canadians and tourists alike. The Chinese Cultural Centre is a four-level facility totaling 32,000 square feet with a Great Hall that can hold up to 400 people, making it the largest space in Montreal’s Chinatown for special events, exhibitions and concerts.
Notable events organized by the Chinese Cultural Centre:
- Weekly activities and classes in Tai chi, dance, Chinese language, Chinese painting and Chinese calligraphy, French and English language classes for adults and seniors
- Performances by visiting theatre and music troupes from China
- Opening of the library at the Chinese Cultural Centre with 4,000 books of Chinese literature, history and culture donated by the Government of China.
- “China Day” at La Ronde, the largest amusement park in Quebec, to promote multicultural awareness; highlights included the Chinese Food Fair, East meet West exhibition that featured paintings by Chinese artists
- Cultural exchanges with the Government of China to give Canadians the opportunity to experience the Chinese culture
- Canadian Citizenship ceremonies in the Great Hall of the Chinese Cultural Centre
- Summer recreation and cultural programs for children
- Heritage classes for adopted children from China and their Canadian parents
- Miss Friendship Selection Gala of the Montreal Chinese Community and Cultural Centre
Mr. Wong continues to participate in the planning and development of the Chinese Cultural Centre, but as a special advisor only. He was born in Toisan County, Guangtong Province but has spent most of his life as a Canadian in his adopted homeland. He is dedicated to promoting multiculturalism, particularly the Chinese culture, in Canada. He has a Bachelor of Engineering degree from McGill University, and is a Professional Engineer in the Province of Quebec.
